I have my most moments of self indulgent pity, it's actually a little pathetic, but hey, I'm human, cut me some slack. :) Last night I was watching a show about a comedic trio here in Australia from the mid 80's to mid 90's called The Doug Anthony All Stars or DAAS.
I knew of them and I like some their songs but I never really knew the whole story. They were really just starting to hit their peak when the band broke up and apparently it was Tim Ferguson, one of the singers, who decided to end the band, but not for the usual reasons that bands break up. Tim had been diagnosed with MS.
MS is a disease where your immune system begins to attack your nervous system. A slow moving horrible disease.
The show centered around the reformation of the band. Using Tim's MS as part of the act in the usual DAAS style. But what was so brave and heart warming was the candidness of Tim and how he spoke about the impacts of MS on his life and the lives of all those around him. We watched him struggle to get out bed, get dressed and saw the long process of showering and getting ready for the day. If you are healthy, you really have hit the jackpot.
In amongst it all Tim said, he's not sad, because he chooses to be happy. There's nothing worthwhile in the alternative. It doesn't go anywhere. It was truly an inspirational experience watching Tim conquer this adversity.
Thanks Tim. You've reminded me of whats important in life and given me a kick in the pants.
